Signs Your Car Battery Needs Replacing

Most batteries give you plenty of warning before they fail completely. If you notice any of the following, it is worth booking a free battery check before you get caught out:

  • The engine cranks slowly or hesitates when you turn the key
  • Headlights or interior lights look dim, especially at idle
  • Electric windows, central locking or the dashboard display are sluggish or glitchy
  • A battery warning light or "check charging system" message appears
  • Your stop-start system has stopped working or shows a fault
  • You have needed a jump-start recently, even just once
  • Clicking sounds when you turn the key but the engine will not catch
  • The battery looks swollen, leaks, or has corrosion around the terminals
  • Your car has been parked unused for several weeks
  • The battery is more than four years old

Most modern car batteries last between four and six years in UK driving conditions, but Devon’s wet winters and lots of short school-run journeys can shorten that lifespan. Cold temperatures alone can reduce a battery’s usable power by around a third, which is why so many breakdowns happen on the first frosty morning of the year.

Our Car Battery Replacement Service

We offer a complete car battery replacement and car battery services package in Tiverton and right across Devon. Book ahead or drop in, and we will:

  1. Test your existing battery and charging system using professional diagnostic equipment, free of charge and with no obligation.
  2. Talk you through the results before any work is carried out, so you understand what is needed and what is not.
  3. Source the correct battery for your make, model and engine, including stop-start AGM and EFB types, traditional lead-acid batteries, and 12V auxiliary batteries for hybrids and EVs.
  4. Fit the new battery using a memory-saver to protect your radio codes, infotainment, seat memory and other vehicle settings.
  5. Reset and re-register the battery to your vehicle’s battery management system (BMS) where required. This step is essential for stop-start cars to charge correctly and last as designed.
  6. Recycle your old battery safely under UK regulations.

The whole process takes around 15 to 45 minutes for most cars. You are welcome to wait in our customer area or pop into Tiverton town centre for a coffee while we work.

Battery Types We Supply and Fit

Modern cars use a wider range of battery technologies than ever before, and fitting the wrong type can leave you with reduced performance, warning lights, or a battery that fails years too early. We supply and fit:

  • Standard lead-acid batteries: the traditional type fitted to older petrol and diesel vehicles without stop-start.
  • EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery): needed for many entry-level stop-start vehicles. Designed to handle far more engine starts than a standard battery.
  • AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat): required for stop-start vehicles with regenerative braking and many premium models. Must be matched correctly and registered to the vehicle.
  • Hybrid and EV 12V auxiliary batteries. Even electric and hybrid cars rely on a 12V battery to power the lights, dashboard, locking and to "wake up" the high-voltage system.
  • Light commercial vehicle batteries: for vans and pickups used by tradespeople and businesses across Devon.
  • Heavy-duty, leisure and motorhome batteries are available on request. Please call ahead so we can confirm the correct part.

If you are not sure what battery your car needs, give us your registration number when you book and we will confirm the correct fitment before you arrive.

Free Car Battery Health Check

Prevention is cheaper than recovery. We offer a free, no-obligation battery health check at our Tiverton service centre. Using a professional conductance tester we measure your battery’s cold-cranking amps, state of charge and state of health, then check the alternator output to make sure your charging system is not the underlying cause. You leave with a clear report and an honest recommendation, with no scare tactics and no pressure to buy.

Battery Warranty

Every new battery we fit comes with a manufacturer-backed warranty, typically three to five years depending on the brand and battery type. We confirm the exact warranty terms at the time of fitting and provide your paperwork before you leave. If anything goes wrong inside the warranty period, bring the battery back to us and we will handle the claim on your behalf.

Battery Disposal and Recycling

Used car batteries are classified as hazardous waste under UK regulations and should never go in a household bin. Every battery we remove is recycled through a licensed waste carrier, so your old battery is dealt with properly and the lead and acid are recovered for re-use. There is no charge for recycling when you have a new battery fitted with us.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a car battery last?

Most modern car batteries last four to six years in typical UK driving. Short journeys, lots of electrical accessories, leaving the car unused for long periods, and harsh winters all shorten battery life.

Can I replace a car battery myself?

On older cars without stop-start, yes. But on most vehicles built in the last ten years the new battery needs to be registered to the car’s battery management system using diagnostic equipment. Without that step, the alternator will not charge the battery correctly and it can fail prematurely. Modern AGM batteries also need careful handling. We do the job properly, register the battery, and protect your car’s settings while we work.

Will I lose my radio codes or settings when the battery is changed?

Not when we change it. We use a professional memory-saver during fitting so your stereo, infotainment, seat memory and steering-angle calibration are preserved.

Do you fit customer-supplied batteries?

Yes. We are happy to fit batteries you have bought elsewhere, including BMS registration, for a fitting-only fee. Please make sure the battery type matches your vehicle’s requirements before you arrive.

What if my electric or hybrid car’s 12V battery fails?

Hybrids and EVs still rely on a 12V auxiliary battery to power the dashboard electronics and to bring the high-voltage system online. We can test and replace these. Please call ahead so we can confirm the correct part and the correct procedure for your model.

Do you offer mobile car battery replacement in Devon?

No, we do not offer mobile car battery replacement.

How quickly can you fit a new battery?

For most cars we have a new battery tested, fitted, registered and signed off within 30 minutes. Stop-start, hybrid and EV 12V replacements can take a little longer, but you are rarely with us for more than an hour.

Do you offer a free battery check?

Yes. Battery health, charging system and starter draw are all checked free of charge with no obligation to buy. Pop in any time during opening hours, or call ahead to be sure of a slot.

What payment methods do you accept?

All major card payments accepted, with the exception of Amex.
